Halloween Photography: Making the Spooky Look Stylish
Halloween is having a glow up. This seasonal occasion, once limited to discount supermarkets selling plastic toys and partyware, is now commanding attention from premium retailers as it evolves into a more sophisticated, adult-friendly celebration. With this shift comes a whole new set of visual considerations for brands looking to tap into the (polter)zeitgeist. At Equator, we’re tracking these emerging trends closely, and using them to inform everything from our props selection to our creative direction.
Here’s what’s changed – and what it means for your Halloween content.
From throwaway to keep forever
Perhaps the most significant change we’re seeing is the move towards sustainability and reusability. Much like Christmas, Halloween is shedding its single-use reputation. People are investing in decorations they’ll want to retrieve from the loft year after year, as well as heirloom-quality items from brands like Le Creuset whose stoneware pumpkin collection contains plenty of bestsellers! At Equator, we’ve clocked this trend and built up a library of elevated Halloween and autumn props – from blown glassware to eclectic textiles and tableware – that can create the grown-up, sustainable aesthetic brands are increasingly seeking.
The perfect boo-quet
In the world of Halloween décor, there has also been a fascinating rise in Halloween floristry, with floral arrangements becoming a central feature. Deep purples, burnt oranges, dramatic blacks, and blood reds are being arranged with the same care you’d give to wedding flowers. Mainstream supermarkets have cottoned on, with retailers like Aldi now offering dedicated Halloween and autumnal flower ranges. The beauty of this trend, from a photography perspective, is its versatility. Floral content can skew gothic and dramatic or bright and autumnal, depending on how you light and style it.
Gothic glamour
For brands targeting an adult audience, the gothic, grown-up Halloween trend is pure gold. Influenced by everything from Tim Burton’s aesthetic to Netflix’s Wednesday, this is Halloween as theatre: refined and dramatic. According to Pinterest’s 2025 Halloween Report, one of the biggest trends this year is Gothic Gatherings (searches for ‘gothic tea parties’ are up 109%).
The photography here leans into darkness. Deep shadows, low-key lighting, candlelit scenes, and rich, moody tones create atmosphere without relying on clichéd Halloween tropes. It’s sophisticated, it’s reusable (those props will photograph beautifully for other occasions too), and it speaks to an audience that’s aged out of plastic cauldrons but very much aged into celebrating October in style.
Day walkers
Of course, a gothic aesthetic doesn’t suit every brand. That’s where the trend we call ‘the day walker’ (inspired by vampires who can tolerate the sunlight, of course) comes in. As you might have guessed, this Halloween content is bright, autumnal, and brings the spooky season into daylight hours.
Natural materials work well here: foraged twigs and decorations crafted from wood, fabric, willow, and straw. The visual impact is notable; these materials bring texture, authenticity, and an elevated aesthetic featuring subtle nods to Halloween. The approach takes typical autumn elements – garlands, leaves, warm lighting, orange and rust tones – and lets them do the work. A pumpkin here, a hint of seasonal styling there. For some audiences, a dark autumnal vibe is enough to signal Halloween without any overtly spooky elements at all.
Indeed, the pumpkin has become October’s icon, stretching the Halloween moment across the entire month. It’s now less about one night of trick-or-treating and more about a whole season of cosy gatherings, seasonal flavours, and autumnal celebration. This trend offers excellent versatility for brands wanting content that works throughout October – imagery that can transition seamlessly from early autumn to Halloween week without feeling too niche.
Embracing the spirit of it all
Halloween in the UK has expanded beyond the children’s table. For brands, this represents a significant opportunity to create seasonal content that’s sophisticated, sustainable, and speaks to an audience that’s ready to celebrate autumn, and Halloween, in style.
At Equator, we work with you to communicate the spirit of the season in a way that’s fresh and relevant but still feels authentically right for your brand, connecting with consumers by understanding what resonates now and bringing it to life through spell-binding imagery and head-turning videography!
