Savour the Moment: How Food and Beverage Photography Elevates Brands
Join Equator on a journey to the heart of culinary storytelling. This blog dives into our artistic laboratories, where food and drinks are styled and composed to create sensory experiences. Explore the creative possibilities, from mouthwatering social media content to enticing product photography, and learn how Equator’s approach goes beyond aesthetics, connecting brands with their audience on a visceral level and leaving a lasting impression.
People often say that food and beverage photography is like still life painting – and with good reason. Both share a painstaking level of attention to detail; every element is arranged with precision and the lighting is set carefully, all to create an experience for the viewer. In Equator’s studios, this intricate assembly of elements forms the beginning of a deeper narrative, as our styling and photography teams transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, turning drinks into muses and meals into masterpieces.
The whole process begins with an understanding of the brand’s identity, values and consumers, and a discussion about specific objectives. This foundation allows our food and beverage stylists and photographers to craft stories that are not only visually compelling but that also resonate on an emotional level. As an agency known for its photography expertise, we work with clients to create a range of visual content, from on-pack photography to hero visuals and lifestyle imagery (essential for an effective omnichannel experience) and social media content, including videography.
On-pack photography
Photography is often an essential element of pack design, adeptly emphasising quality, taste and texture while delivering a healthy dose of appetite appeal. Each on-pack image is carefully staged. Every crumb, every shadow, every glimmer of light plays a pivotal role. It’s about controlling the uncontrollable, making sure that the steam from a hot beverage or the subtle drip of a chocolate glaze is captured at just the right moment, in just the right way.
But it doesn’t have to be complicated; some of the best on pack food photography is simple and striking. Take the Essential Waitrose range, which features a clean, white aesthetic and bold typography alongside product shots that are styled minimally, without props, to showcase the products without frills or fuss. This tells an important story about Waitrose’s commitment to quality and transparency.
Head-turning hero visuals
At Equator, we frequently harness the power of hero imagery to create a compelling focal point for websites and campaigns. Throughout the process we focus on delivering a unique narrative that speaks directly to consumers. In order to establish a connection with them, each image must embody the brand’s identity and values, showcasing what is special about the product.
Story-telling lifestyle images
Lifestyle imagery plays a fundamental role when it comes to showcasing products, but it is also effective at telling a broader story that resonates with consumers on a personal level. At Equator, we create lifestyle imagery that paints a vivid picture of how a product (or products) fits into people’s lives. Whether it’s aspirational or relatable, it elicits an emotional response in the viewer, speaking to their desires, interests and personal values. This makes it an effective way of elevating the perceived value of a product or brand.
Lifestyle photography featured heavily in a recent project with Morrisons. Alongside art-deco-inspired designed for its Peach Bellini, Clementine Bucks Fizz and Berry Fizz bottles, we shot lifestyle photography that nodded to the roaring twenties, conveying a sense of decadence, celebration and ‘fizz’. We often take inspiration from a product’s provenance or history to create the right aesthetic, an approach that is apparent in this shoot, which showcased a classic: the Margarita. Everything from the rugged textures to the desert-inspired colour palette creates an idea of place and centres the drink as the hero.
Scroll-stopping social media content
For many of our clients, having social media-ready photography is hugely important. After all, in the digital realm, first impressions are made in the blink of an eye. Our photographers and videographers are experienced in creating images that aren’t just aesthetically pleasing but also optimised for social feeds, considering the formats preferred on each platform, the use of vibrant colours and textures to stop the scroll, and the integration of branding elements. We also elevate brands through videography, leveraging the dynamic nature of video content to tell stories that resonate and drive conversion.
By marrying the art and science of food and beverage styling and photography, Equator helps brands forge a meaningful connections with their consumers. We keep our finger on the pulse when it comes to industry and sector trends, to make sure our approach is well-informed, and prioritise a consultative approach, working in true partnership with our clients to deliver on their objectives and exceed their expectations.
